BEMENT — Ernest E. “Deak” Shonkwiler Jr., 77, of Bement passed away at 3:45 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 31, 2019) at home.
Deak was born Aug. 19, 1941, in Monticello, the son of Ernest E. and Adelia (Perkins) Shonkwiler Sr. He married Janet F. Miller on July 31, 1966, in Ash Grove.
Deak is survived by his wife, Janet Shonkwiler of Bement; sons, Craig Shonkwiler (Carly) of Saint Joseph and Kent Shonkwiler (Stephanie) of Bement; grandchildren, Calin, Ellie, Max, Aiden and Sam; and brother, Paul “Dewayne” Shonkwiler (Janice) of Long Creek.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Deak worked at Caterpillar for 38 years, retiring in Quality Control. Deak got to take a four-year cruise because of serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Monticello, Bement Masonic Lodge 365and Albert Parker American
Legion Post 620. Deak enjoyed woodworking, reading and watching Westerns, going to his grandchildren’s activities and was a Cardinals fan.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at Christ Lutheran Church, Monticello, with Masonic rites at 6:30 p.m. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at Christ Lutheran Church, with Pastor Julia Rademacher officiating. Interment will be in Bement Township Cemetery.
