Robert Walter Elgin - St. Joseph Lodge

Elgin, Robert WalterRobert Walter Elgin was called by the Lord to his heavenly home on December 12th, 2008. Bob passed peacefully away in his Citadel apartment at the age of 92. He was born to Robert Earl and Izzetta Elgin on September 29, 1916 in Hannibal, Missouri. Bob married Delma Nugent in June 1935 residing in Hannibal, Quincy (Illinois); Urbana (Illinois) and then to Boulder, Colorado for a number of years, retiring to Mesa, Arizona near Delma's family. Bob's beloved Delma preceded him in death on December 3, 1999 following 64 years of marriage. Bob is survived by their only daughter, Mrs. Carol (Bill) Williams of Avondale, Arizona; grandsons Bob Sterrett of Tempe, Arizona and Steve Sterrett of Charlotte, North Carolina; three great grandchildren Samantha Sterrett of Mesa, Arizona; sisters Becki Lamb and Theresa Sterrett (sons Oscar and Alex Sterrett) of California; only surviving sister Mrs. Ginny (Jack) Riggs in Missouri; and brother-in-law, Cliff (Ruth) Nugent of Mesa; nieces and nephews. Bob proudly served his country by enlisting in the Army for World War II and again for the Korean conflict. While serving in the Philippines Bob was a member of the Square and Compass, card dated Feb. 1945, being active also at Sunland Village East, Mesa, over the recent years. Bob was "raised" with the St. Joseph #970 Illinois Chapter of Masonic Lodge, January l940. He received his 50th year award from the Boulder Colorado Lodge #45 in 1990. He and Delma were each active in the Eastern Star, Bob serving as Worthy Patron at St. Joseph, Illinois. He had been a member of the American Legion since his discharge from the Army. Bob worked most of his life for the US Postal Office in Urbana, Illinois and Boulder, Colorado as the Postal Supervisor. He and Delma enjoyed traveling to most of the United States. He served as an usher at the Grace Methodist Church in Mesa. Bob enjoyed his family/friends and was loved by all, including the staff/friends at the Citadel where he resided the last 1½ years. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Sojourn Care and Citadel staff for their care given to our loved one. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sojourn Care, 7975 N. Hayden Rd., Suite A-205, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. Viewing will be held at 10:00 AM one hour prior to the services on Thursday December 18, 2008 at the Meldrum Mortuary on 52 N. Macdonald, Mesa, Arizona. Burial will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery following the services.
