BEMENT – Joe Rittenhouse, 76, of Bement passed away at 5:42 a.m. Sunday (April 2, 2017) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement. Pastor Amos Dillman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Bement Township Cemetery, Bement.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Bement Fire Protection District or the Bement EMTs.
Joe was born on Dec. 20, 1940, in Decatur, a son of Joe H. and Phyllis Metcalf Rittenhouse. He married Ronda Morris on July 7, 1962, in Ivesdale. She passed away on Feb. 25, 2012.
Surviving children include Melissa (Mark) Yoder of Arthur and Morris Rittenhouse of Bement. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Tyler (Jacqueline) Yoder of Monticello, Kyle (Cindy) Yoder of Arthur and Tyce Rittenhouse of Bement; as well as a great-grandson, Maxwell Yoder of Monticello.
Other survivors include a brother, Stephen Rittenhouse of Bement; a sister, Carolyn (Melvin) Rittenhouse Jacobs of Mansfield; and a brother-in-law, Dave (Linda) Morris of Edgewood.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Joe was a member of the Bement United Methodist Church, a 47-year member of the Bement Masonic Lodge 365 AF&AM and was a past master in 1976. He was a charter member of the Piatt County Historical Society and active member of the Piatt County Republican Precinct Committeemen and served for 58 years on the Bement Fire Protection District.
Joe was one of the youngest highway commissioners in Illinois, elected in 1962, which he still currently served. He was active in Central States Threshermen's Association, serving as president since 2007. He was a board member of the Threshermen's Association for over 41 years, holding different offices for 37 of the 41 years. For 18 years, he was vice president from 1984-1998, as well as second vice president in 2001 and president for the last 12 years.
