CHRISMAN – John Joseph Coy, 79, of Chrisman went home to be with the Lord on Thursday (July 21, 2016).
John was born on Sept. 14, 1936, in Metcalf to Joe and Olive (Rhyan) Coy. He was a 1955 graduate of Young America High School and farmed in northern Edgar County.
John was a member of the Metcalf Christian Church where he served as an elder for many years. He also was a member of the Hume Masonic Lodge 829, the Edgar County Shrine Club, the Ansar Shrine in Danville, the Springfield Grand Lodge AF&AF-IL, and he was a 32nd degree Mason. He also served as commissioner for the Hughes Drainage District and Shiloh No. 2 Township.
He loved farming and was very proud of his John Deere equipment which he kept in immaculate condition. He also enjoyed antique tractors and was a former member of the I & I Antique Tractor Association.
John was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and his greatest joy was being with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marcella Kay (Jones) Coy; two daughters, Kay Ann Coy of Noblesville, Ind., and Betty Jo (Eric) Shorts of Carmel, Ind.; a granddaughter, Elise Shorts of Carmel, Ind.; a niece, Paula (Colin) McClain of Shelbyville; and two nephews, Mark (Sharon) Julian of Springfield, Mo., and Kevin (Pam) Julian of Metcalf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Coy; a sister, Joan Julian; and a niece, Sheila Julian Wright.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Central time on Sunday, July 24, at the Metcalf Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Metcalf Christian Church.
