RANTOUL – Earl G. Weichel, 87, of Rantoul passed away in the loving arms of his wife at home on Saturday (July 2, 2016).
Mr. Weichel was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Dubuque, Iowa. He married Joan L. Dettmann, whom he loved very much, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dubuque on July 10, 1959.
She survives together with a daughter, Pamela Harris; a son, Craig Weichel; a granddaughter, Alyssa Harris; and a wonderful son-in-law, Tom Harris.
He is also survived by two sisters, Hilda Shade and Glenda Reynolds (Dubuque, Iowa).
Mr. Weichel served in both the United States Navy and U.S. Army from 1946 to 1954. Most of his working career was in the management of Caradco, where he retired in 1995.
He loved Rantoul and was active in the community in many capacities. He served as director and past president of the Armed Services YMCA, a past director of the Rantoul Chamber of Commerce, a section leader for the United Way, a director of the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, and a director and past president of the Rantoul Community Foundation. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Free and Accepted Masons and served as president of the Rantoul Rotary Club in 1985. His involvement in the community earned him the "Outstanding" Citizen of the Year award.
His hobbies included fly fishing and woodworking, which was second only to keeping in touch with his children and very special granddaughter.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at the First United Methodist Church, Rantoul. A service to celebrate his life will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Paula Wallace and the Rev. Paul Simpkins will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Rantoul Rotary Club, or Masonic Lodge No. 470 in Rantoul, Illinois.
