VILLA GROVE – Robert C. (Bob) Sergent passed away on Thursday (March 24, 2016) at age 84 in Glen Carbon from complications related to Parkinson's disease.
Bob was born on Jan. 23, 1932, in DuQuoin. He was the only child of James and Beatrice Sergent. He graduated from DuQuoin High School in 1949 and Southern Illinois University in 1953. He later received his master's degree in education from the University of Illinois.
Bob was a school teacher in the Villa Grove School District for over 50 years, teaching various junior high classes, coaching basketball a few years, then eventually teaching driver's education.
Bob's favorite teaching position was when he took over the revival of the building trades program in 1968. He and "his boys" built over 30 houses in the Villa Grove area.
Not being one to sit still, he also spent his summer school vacations working in the construction business for various companies. His favorite summers were spent in the company of Phil Durland Sr.'s colorful work crews building houses and having a grand time joking with fellow co-workers.
Bob is survived by two daughters, Judy (Mike) Cline of Indianapolis, Ind., and Dana (Lee) Terhark of Alton; and one granddaughter, Melanie Cline of Indianapolis.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Beatrice (Beacham) Sergent.
Bob loved to travel. He also retained a love of his Southern Illinois roots, traveling back to DuQuoin frequently, most specifically during the DuQuoin State Fair every Labor Day weekend.
Bob took many trips around the country and around the world, often taking a family member or his beloved bicycle. He biked through places such as Eastern Europe, down the routes along the Mississippi River, and the like. He was a rabid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Bob also loved car racing. He and his dirt car racing buddies would travel the Midwest, taking in as many dirt car races as they could for many years.
In his later years, Bob also participated in many 5K runs.
Bob will be remembered for the pride he took in his "Trades Boys" and for his ability to make his friends and students laugh, and enjoy the time spent with him.
Bob especially enjoyed his infrequent "Brotherhood Meetings" with his fellow Brotherhood members. Bob was a 50-plus-year member of the Villa Grove United Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Villa Grove Lions Club, and he attained his 32nd degree with the Villa Grove-Camargo Masonic Lodge 885 AF & AM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Villa Grove United Methodist Church or the Meridian Village Retirement Community, Glen Carbon.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Joines Funeral Home, Illinois 130 South, Villa Grove.
