VILLA GROVE – Wendell Ralph Pittman, age 75 (he would tell you 39), of Villa Grove went to be with our Lord on Wednesday (Aug. 26, 2015) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Wendell was born June 21, 1940, in Rossville, a son of Ralph C. and Agnes (McGiver) Pittman. He married Judith A. Masengale on Oct. 4, 1964, in Hoopeston. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Debbie (Jim) Berry, Dana (Jim) Clark and Kelly Donley, all from the Villa Grove area. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Emily Berry, Ashly Berry, Austin Donley, Brandon Donley, Michael West and Cooper Clark. He also had one great-grandson, Jace Mauer.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Wendell worked as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad for 41 years. He was very talented in woodworking, gardening or anything he decided to build with his hands. He enjoyed fishing, camping and the great outdoors.
He served in the U.S. Army for four years and traveled Europe, loving Germany the best. He was an Eagle Scout and was extremely proud of the fact that, at 14 years of age, he traveled by himself to California to the Boy Scouts National Jamboree. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved his church family at Victory Church in Camargo.
The love he showed to his family was incomparable. He treated everyone he met with love and kindness. Everyone he encountered was greeted with a smile, handshake or a hug around the neck. After meeting him, people knew they had a friend for life and could count on him for anything, anytime or anywhere. He always had a joke to tell before you parted. He was a giver, helper and a kind soul. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. His family will miss him every day for the rest of their days on earth. He loved our Lord most of all, and now he is with him.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, with a 5 p.m. Masonic service by Villa Grove-Camargo Masonic Lodge 885, at Joines Funeral Home, Illinois 130 South, Villa Grove.
Funeral services, with Pastor Duane Piercy officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at the funeral home. Burial with military rites by the Walter Jones VFW Post 2876 will be in the Centennial Cemetery, Villa Grove.
Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or Victory Church of Camargo.
