Kenneth Wayne "Ken" Smith, 83 of Normal, IL passed away at 8:40 PM on Monday, April 20, 2015 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington IL.
His funeral service will be 1:00 PM Saturday (April 25, 2015) at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, IL. Dr. John Jones will officiate. Burial will be in White Oak Democrat Cemetery, Carlock, IL. Visitation will be 3:00 PM--7:30 PM Friday, April 24, 2015 at the memorial home, with a Commandry Service at 7:30 PM and a Masonic Service to follow. Ken was born March 18, 1932 in Normal, IL the son of Vernon David and Thelma Hazel Boss Smith.
Surviving is his close friend and companion Jane M. Hanson, Glenview, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
Kenny began his long Masonic career in 1955 when he petitioned Danvers Lodge #742. He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice, passed to the degree of Fellowcraft, and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1955. He served as Worshipful Master of Danvers Lodge in 1960. He was commissioned as a Grand Lecturer in the Grand Lodge of Illinois on 2/1/1962. Danvers Lodge merged with Normal Lodge #673 on 1/5/2006.
He joined the Valley of Bloomington, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, in 1955 and served as Most Wise Master of Mt. Calvary Chapter of Rose Croix in 1975. He received his Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois Council of Deliberation in 1983 and was coroneted a 33° Sovereign Grand Inspector General in 2002 at the annual meeting of the Supreme Council.
Kenny was created a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., in Mohammed Shrine in Peoria in 1955. He served in various capacities including a member of the Novats and the Calliope Unit.
Kenny was active in all of the York Rite Bodies, not only locally, but on the state level as well. He served as Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the State of Illinois in 1992. He then served as Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of the State of Illinois in 2001. He also served as Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Illinois in 2013. He received the Order of the Purple Cross from the York Rite Sovereign College of North America in 1980.
He was a member of Illinois Priory No. 11, Knight York Cross of Honor, and served as Eminent Prior in 1985.He was a member of the Magdala #18 Order of the White Shrine Jerusalem, Clinton, IL. Past Watchman of Shepherds of Magdala #18 of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Clinton, IL. Member of Glenview Chapter #862, Glenview, IL and Heather Court #27, Palatine, IL. Kenneth retired as a locomotive engineer from Amtrak after 20 years of service. After his retirement his favorite past time was being active with farming.
