NEWMAN – Robert E. "Bob" Miller, 74, of Newman went to be with God at 5:40 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 3, 2015), surrounded by family at the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana, after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Born Feb. 13, 1940, Bob was the son of Harold R. and Avis J. Miller. On Aug. 1, 1980, he married Naomi E. Howard Fry.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert L. (Tina) Miller of Tooele, Utah, and John D. Fry of Tuscola; two daughters, Janice (Will) Reynolds of Spring Bay, Ill., and Tiffany Fry of Urbana; four granddaughters; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Susan (Denny) Long of Camargo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathleen "Kathy" Allen and her husband John Allen, and their grandson Dustin Allen.
Bob loved his family and had a special love for his 1979 Dodge "Lil Red Express" truck and antique vehicles. He also had a 1950 Dodge car which he reworked and took to shows and parades. He won several trophies with both vehicles.
He loved God, his family and many friends and enjoyed visiting with them and going to car shows and watching NASCAR races and playing with his beloved dog Sophie.
Bob graduated from Newman High School in 1958. He served in the Army from April 1963 to April 1965. He then went to work for Allerton Supply Company as propane manager, starting the propane route and delivering propane until his retirement in 2005.
He was a volunteer fireman for the Newman Fire Department for over 25 years, township trustee for many years and was on the city board.
He was a 50-year member of the Stanton Burgett Legion Post 201 of Newman, where he was a commander seven different times. He was also a member of the Masons and had been Past Master of Newman Masonic Lodge. He belonged to the Eastern Star and served as Past Worthy Person.
At the time of his death he was attending Victory Church of Camargo.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 10, at Joines-Appleby Funeral Home in Newman. A visitation will be held prior to service from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Burial with full military rites will be held at Newman Cemetery in Newman. The Rev. Duane Piercy and Mr. Steve Allen will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Newman Legion Post 201 or the Victory Church in Camargo.
