CLINTON – Merle S. Miller, 82, of Clinton passed away 8:05 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 13, 2014) at his family home in Clinton.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Mausoleum Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military honors.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton.
Memorials may be made to the education fund for Merle's grandchildren.
Merle was born Jan. 18, 1932, in Clinton, the son of Carl S. and Esther (Turner) Miller. He married Helen Wagner on Dec. 12, 1959, in Clinton.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Miller of Clinton; three sons, Brett (Jill) Miller of Clearwater, Fla., Bart (Margery) Miller of Albany, N.Y., and Brad (Janeen) Miller of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren, Brianna, Ryan, Ashley and Grace; and one sister, Margorie Anderson of Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Merle was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving as a naval officer in San Diego following college. He farmed and raised purebred, registered Angus cattle for 55 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Clinton Country Club, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, DeWitt Masonic Lodge, Bloomington Consistory, Ansar Shrine of Springfield, Illinois Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board, American Angus Association, Illinois Corn Marketing Board and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity; he was a 1955 graduate of the University of Illinois.
He was also a Clintonia Township trustee, past president of the DeWitt County Elevator, past president of the DeWitt County Farm Bureau and director of the Division of Fairs and Horse Racing for the state of Illinois from 1984 to 1991, the second longest in the history of the fair.
