NORMAL — Leslie E. “Les” Glenn, 86, Heritage Health, Normal, passed away at 6:28 p.m. Monday (Aug. 4, 2014) at Heritage Health, Normal.
He was a 40-year associate of State Farm Insurance Cos.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the memorial home, with the Rev. Mike McGaughan officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, LeRoy. Military rites will be conducted by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Les was born June 26, 1928, in Clinton, a son of Charles H. Glenn and Vivien Seal Glenn. Most of his early years were spent on a farm near Clinton.
He married Barbara Bruce on March 28, 1953, in LeRoy. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Debra (Ole) Ibsen, Bloomington; Amy (Wayne) Price, Dublin, Ohio; and Gary (Libby) Glenn, Normal; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
His early education consisted of attending a one-room rural school in the Prairie Center neighborhood northeast of Clinton. He graduated from Clinton Community High School in 1946, where he participated in baseball and football, and was selected to be a member of the National Honor Society and elected to the student council.
Upon graduation from high school, Les attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, graduating in 1950. While there he played baseball, and during his sophomore year, played baseball in Beloit, Kan., in a summer college league. Les was also actively engaged in fast-pitch softball in Central Illinois.
Upon graduation, he taught in the Clinton school system for two months before being drafted into the U.S. Army, serving overseas in Japan and Korea from 1950 through 1952. Upon his discharge, he enrolled in the University of Illinois and graduated with a master's degree in 1954.
In 1954, he became a college trainee at State Farm Insurance Cos. in the Auto Company. He held a number of positions in the Illinois Regional Office. However, most of his career was spent at Corporate Headquarters where he was afforded the opportunity to work on a number of pioneering projects, including the State Farm Payment Plan, where he served as director shortly after its founding. He retired in 1993, but went back to manage the Pay Plan in the Sunland Regional Office in Tempe, Ariz., in 1997 for six months. In 1999, he worked in the Illinois Regional Office with the Pay Plan as well.
He held two professional insurance designations of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
Les was an avid Chicago Cubs and University of Illinois football fan. He was a 40-year U of I football season ticket holder and a member of the I Club Fund. Les was a member of a number of organizations in the past, including the LeRoy Country Club, McLean County Seniors Golf Association, and LeRoy Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, and a past deacon in LeRoy Presbyterian Church. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
