CHAMPAIGN – Walter B. Lebegue, 78, of Champaign died at 5:14 a.m. Friday (July 4, 2014) at Illini Heritage Nursing Home in Champaign.
There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign.
The funeral service will be at noon Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Tom Wirsing will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
Walter was born on Aug. 13, 1935, at Lafayette, Ind., a son of Walter P. and Winifred (Long) Lebegue. He married Mary Hall on Oct. 30, 1965, at Mahomet. She died on Sept. 18, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, Philip (Lyn) Hall of Mahomet and Marc (Marsha) Hall of Sidney; three daughters, Janet (Myron) Smith of Canton, N.C., Karen Niblick of Lebanon, Ind., and Kari (Bill) Kinsey of Richmond, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, a brother and his wife.
Walter was a 3rd Degree Mason at the Tippecanoe Lodge in Indiana. He was also a member of the Champaign Stamp Club. Walter was a founding member of the CITW Wargame Club.
He was a lifelong educator and worked as both a teacher and principal in Mansfield and Effingham Unit 40 School District.
Walter was never one to back down from a challenge and rose to the occasion when offered the opportunity to teach in Guam with his wife.
Walter started playing football in elementary school and graduated in 1953 from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Ind. He went on to play football at Indiana State University, where he played running back and set several rushing records.
