LUDLOW – George W. "Bill" Griswold, 92, of Anderson, Ind., and Venice, Fla., and formerly of Ludlow, passed away on Thursday (July 3, 2014) at Community Hospital Anderson in Anderson, Ind.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1922, at Champaign and was a member of the Christian Church in Ludlow.
George attended Gallagher school in rural Ludlow and graduated from Paxton High School in 1939. He joined the Army on Feb. 11, 1941, serving his country during World War II in France, Italy, Africa, Germany and Austria.
Before marriage to Beverly, he completed HVAC training in Chicago. Following his marriage, he bought the former Gallagher school, converting it to a home where he and his family resided for 20 years.
While there, he was a plumber, sold home insurance and farmed with his father. In 1970, he moved to Anderson, where he purchased the McDonald's restaurant in downtown Anderson. Following retirement in 1987, he owned and operated Griswold Travel.
He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion; he was also a member of 40/8, the Elks in Venice, Fla., and Paxton, Masonic Lodge, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, International Shrine club of Indianapolis, Madison County Shrine club of Anderson, and the Madison County Legion of Honor, and former participant of the Madison County Desert Patrol. He was a proud member of the Society of the 3rd Infantry.
He enjoyed traveling in the United States, Europe, Central and South America, Hawaii, New Zealand, Alaska, the Greek Islands, Egypt and Israel. He also enjoyed dancing and playing cards. He spent four years building his 1929 Mercedes and enjoyed parading in it.
George is survived by his loving spouse, Beverly (Brison) Griswold, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1948; and children, David W. (companion, Barbara Demlow) Griswold of Anderson, Kristin L. (James) Stanley of Anderson, Sherrilyn L. West of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and James W. Griswold of Anderson; grandchildren, Julie Kowalke, Joe Griswold, Scott and Brian Martinez, Amber, Ashley, Dustin (wife, Bailey), Andrea and Sydney Griswold; and step-grandchildren, James K. (Carol) and Mike K. (Janet) Stanley, and Barbara's children, Elizabeth, Crystal, Bobbey, Katheryne; great-grandchildren, Jessika, Saylor, Caleb, Dylan, Jared, Chandler, Owen and Serenity; and nieces and nephews, Andrea Forney, Stacy Poncelow, Diane Griswold, Ralph and Bryce Bankert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Anna B.(Watson) Griswold; granddaughter, Michele Giddings; and siblings, Helen Kennedy Price, Alice Bartell Williamson and Richard Griswold.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, with a Masonic Service at 12:45 p.m., at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, Anderson, Ind.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Anderson, Ind.
Burial with military graveside rites will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ludlow Township Cemetery, Ludlow.
Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton, is handling local arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent's Anderson Regional Hospital and/or Community Hospital Anderson.
