CATLIN – Robert L. Songer, 88, of Catlin, well-known local area businessman, passed away at 12:47 p.m. Wednesday (March 12, 2014) at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Danville.
Robert was born April 22, 1925, in Catlin, to Herman Fredrick "Lee" and Lela Agnes Morris Songer. He married Jeane L. Jamison on Oct. 7, 1943, in the chapel at Chandler Air Force Base, Ariz. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2013.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet L. Songer of Ottawa and Bobbee (Gregg) Hawkins of Catlin; eight grandchildren, Todd (Rachel) Taylor of Cincinnati, Ohio, Heather (Lance) Reason of Dixon, Jennifer (Glenn) Joseph of West Bloomfield, Mich., Jami Dunn Cannell of Rock Falls, Ill., Matthew S. Depratt of Catlin, Gracie (Brooks) Ruyle of Downers Grove, Haley (fiance Joe Miller) Hawkins of LeRoy and Jesse (Abbey) Hawkins of LeRoy; seven great-grandchildren, Katie Reason, Mackenzie and Nicholas Joseph, Andrew Jamison Cannell, Will Songer Ruyle, Grayson Robert Ruyle and Zoe Jeane Ruyle; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Jamison and Pat Songer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Maryann Songer Taylor, and one brother, Jack Songer.
R.L. owned and operated Songer Chevrolet in Catlin for over 30 years. He was a member of the Catlin United Methodist Church and the church choir for 70 years.
He served in the Army Air Corps.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, past member of the Catlin Lions Club, and had been Catlin Man of the Year. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest passion was golfing at which he was very accomplished.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Catlin United Methodist Church. Pastor Nancy Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Catlin. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.
