URBANA – Mr. Charlie Johnson of Urbana died on Saturday (Nov. 9, 2013) at Champaign-Urbana Regional Rehab Center, Savoy.
He was born June 9, 1936, in Lafayette, Ala., a son of Edward and Addie B. Johnson. He married Cora Robinson on Oct. 15, 1966, in Danville. She survives.
Survivors also include a daughter, Linda Lloyd of Chicago; four sons, Matthew C. Johnson, Richard Winston, Michael Winston and Spencer Laws of Urbana; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Johnson received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Alabama State University and a master's degree in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Illinois.
He worked as a Personnel Officer IV, Labor Relations Specialist II and Deputy Director of Staff Human Resources during a 20-year period of work in Human Resource Offices at the UI. He retired from the UI in August 1999.
In the 11 years preceding his work at the university, Mr. Johnson worked during alternate periods as either executive director of the Champaign County Opportunities Industrialization Center or as a member of the staff of the Urban League of Champaign County.
Mr. Johnson served on a number of civic and community boards. He was also a past member of the Epsilon Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and of Lone Star Lodge No. 18 and Menelik Consistory No. 49.
Mr. Johnson received an honorable discharge for three years of service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a radio teletype operator.
Mr. Johnson was baptized as a member of Nichols Chapel A.M.E. Church, Lafayette, Ala.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. The visitation will be the half hour prior to the service at the funeral home (9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday). Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. Military rites will be accorded by VFW Post 5520.
