GREENUP – Herschel Lee Ward, 83, of Greenup, formerly of Brocton, was called home on Saturday (Aug. 17, 2013) at Kindred Hospital in Greenwood, Ind.
He was born in Vermilion County, Ill., on May 27, 1930, to Lester Leander Ward and Daisy Irene (Swick) Ward. On June 13, 1954, he married Virginia Darlene Varney at the First Christian Church in Tuscola.
Herschel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia "Ginny" Ward; two children, Matt (Christina) Ward of Homer and Julie Ward of Indianapolis, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Malachai Ward of Indianapolis, Ind., and Alexandria and Samantha Ward of Homer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Herschel served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, coming home to take over the family farm. He continued to farm until retiring in 2007. He also had a 38-year-long career at USI in Tuscola as a production superintendent of the alcohol unit.
Herschel was happiest doing anything outdoors and loved going to farm sales, fixing and building things and dearly loved playing with his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Tuscola Masonic Lodge No. 332 and the Toledo Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Tuscola Cemetery.
