BEMENT – Robert "Bob" Shonkwiler, 70, of Danville, formerly of Bement, passed away at 10:40 p.m. on July 26, 2013, at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care Center, Danville.
Bob was born Oct. 29, 1942, in Staley, the son of Elmer "Bud" and Edna (Winter) Shonkwiler. He married Virginia L. Robinson on Oct. 19, 1963, in Bement.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Shonkwiler of Monticello; sons, Jason (Deb) Shonkwiler of Monticello and Brandon Shonkwiler of Bement; special person, Ted Brittenham of Charleston; grandchildren, Cale, Allison, Wyatt, and Amelia Shonkwiler; step-grandson, Jonathan Rogers; mother, Edna Shonkwiler of Monticello; brothers, John "Bud" (Ann) Shonkwiler, Jeff (Debbie) Shonkwiler, Steve (Jodi) Shonkwiler, all of Bement; and sisters, Shirley (Dwight) Rosenbery of Decatur and Sandy Fritz (companion Greg Romack) of Bement.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Bob retired as owner/operator of the Bement IGA. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Albert Parker American Legion Post No. 620 of Bement and the Bement Masonic Lodge No. 365 AF&AM. Bob was an avid horseback rider and enjoyed coaching baseball in Bement.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. Mike Heiniger officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Interment will be in Bement Township Cemetery with military graveside rites.
