CHAMPAIGN – Funeral services for Rubin James Owens, who died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2012), will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 1310 N. Sixth St., Champaign, Illinois; visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. The Rev. Rickey E. Parks will be officiating.
Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Garden, Urbana.
Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams, Danville, is in charge of arrangements.
Rubin Owens was born Feb. 27, 1935, in Corinth, Miss., to Rufus and Mary Owens. He left Mississippi in 1954 to work briefly on the railroad and at the University of Illinois, until employment was obtained at General Motors in Tilton. Rubin worked for General Motors for 35 years and retired in 1987. After retiring, he became a bus monitor for the Unit 4 school district.
Rubin became a member of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in 1955 and was active in various auxiliaries such as the Male Chorus, the Church Trustee Board and the Church Building Fund. He was a founding member of the gospel group The Holy Zioneers and a member of Lone Star Masonic Lodge 18.
Mr. Owens is survived by his children, Audra Owens of Urbana, Willie Owens (Vicki) of Champaign and Brenda Owens of Urbana; one grandson, Nathan Owens of Urbana; one sister, Georgia Keith (Vasco) of Corinth, Miss.; one brother, John (Ernestina) of Corinth, Miss.; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers.
