He was born in St. Louis on Aug. 26, 1935, and was the son of Wallace and Elizabeth George. He married Alberta M. Mifflin on May 24, 1957, at Faith United Methodist Church in Centralia, and she survives him in Tuscola.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a daughter, Connie Ebert and husband Jon of Gilroy, Calif.; two grandchildren, Will Ebert and Sidney Ebert of Gilroy; two brothers, Ricky Ray and wife Judy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Robert Panyik and wife Betty of Fairfax Station, Va.; and one sister, Ruth Steinberg and husband Bernie of Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jim Gannon; and one sister, Opal Angle.
John graduated from Odin High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army in June 1958, served in the Cold War and was honorably discharged in June 1960. John had worked at Lear-Zeigler and Illinois Central Railroad, and retired from USI Chemicals.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 35 years and a member of the Odin Christian Church. Most of all, John will be remembered as a loving family member and for never refusing to help a neighbor, relative, friend or stranger. All who knew
him will remember him as a perfect gentleman.
Funeral services for Mr. George will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Hillcrest Lakeside Chapel in Centralia. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. at the chapel.
