Delbert Warnes Jr.
He was known by his family and friends as "Gene" and was born Jan. 30, 1944, in Champaign. He graduated from ABL High School class of 1962 and attended Illinois Commercial College. He served in the Army National Guard of Illinois.
Gene married Shirley May Verdin on Sept. 17, 1967, in Villa Grove. They were married for 44 1/2 years.
He worked at Champaign Builders Supply for 48 years in the front office and was a Mason for 31 years. He served as drainage commissioner for the Raymond-Murdock township and was a member of the Longview United Methodist Church.
Gene enjoyed watching Cardinal baseball and Illini sports, cooking/grilling, gardening and spending time with all of his girls. He especially loved making people laugh and
was well-known for his ready smile, friendly wave and really tasty homemade pizza.
Gene is survived by his wife; three daughters, Tamara Jean (Mitch) Levine, Tracey Jo (Brian) Schwarzentraub and Terri Jane (Don) Powell; his four granddaughters, Katie, Claire, Joie and Cassie; his sister, Martha (Jim) Barrett; and many other family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Faye Eckerty Warnes; a brother, Robert Warnes; a sister, Patricia McConiga; and his in-laws, Bill and Dolores Boyd.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Joines Funeral Home in Villa Grove. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the funeral home. Pastor Mark Jordan will officiate. Burial will be held at the
Fairfield Cemetery in Newman.
Gene's family would like to thank so many family members and friends who provided encouragement and support during Gene's brief illness. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America Inc. or to the American Cancer Society or an
organization of the donor's choosing.
