ST. JOSEPH – Robert "Bob" Hitt, 82, of St. Joseph, formerly of Hopedale, entered into God's kingdom on Tuesday (Feb. 7, 2012), surrounded by his family at his home in St. Joseph.
Bob was born on Feb. 24, 1929, in Allen Grove Township, to Melvin and Mildred (Hunt) Hitt of Hopedale. Raised in Hopedale, he attended elementary and high school with interests including student council, basketball and music.
After graduation he worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co., drove a truck hauling farm equipment, and was a grain inspector for the State of Illinois. Bob joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1952 following the death of his father.
Bob married Bonny Orr of Stanford on Valentine's Day in 1952 at Sumter, S.C. Upon discharge, Bob and Bonny returned to Hopedale where he began working for Pioneer Seed Corn.
Later he joined Pyrofax gas company and was transferred to Eldridge, Iowa, in 1960, followed by a transfer to Urbana in 1962.
He later became an auditor for Tuloma gas company, which merged into Standard Oil where he was district manager. He retired in 1993 from Trisler Seed corn, Fairmount.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Terry (Teresa) and Todd (Jamie), all of St. Joseph; four grandchildren, Tracy (Marcy) Hitt, Tiffany (Justin) West of Farmer City, Jody (Brent) Bohnert of Perryville, Mo., and Jessie Hitt of St. Joseph; four great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Judi (Alan) Spear of Batavia.
Bob was a trustee with the St. Joseph-Stanton Fire Protection District for 12 years and a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, and Ogden Masonic Lodges, ANSAR Shrine, Illini Shrine, Scottish Rite and St. Joseph American Legion. He was a member of the International Association of Turtles, Inc.
Funeral arrangements include a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Freese Funeral Home in St. Joseph. Masonic rites will be accorded at 7 p.m.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Freese Funeral Home, with interment in Mount Olive Cemetery, Mayview.
Services are entrusted to Davis Mortuary, Hopedale, and Freese Funeral Home, St. Joseph.
