Walter Fischer Jr.

CHAMPAIGN – Walter R. Fischer Jr. 88, of Champaign, formerly of Chicago, passed away Friday (Aug. 12, 2011) at his home in Champaign. He was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Chicago to Dr. Walter and Esther Ackerson Fischer Sr. He grew up in Chicago and went to Northwestern University.
He married Betty Anderson in 1945.
He is survived by a longtime friend, Ruth Moak of Champaign; one son, Ralph Fischer of Champaign; one daughter, Catherine Emanuel of Champaign; four grandchildren, Scott Fischer of Shelbyville, Karen Fischer of Urbana, Elizabeth Emanuel of Washington, D.C., and Marcus Emanuel of New York, N.Y.; two step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and one sister, JoAnn Nordhaus of Skokie.
He was retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Commander and was a World War II veteran. He established the Naval Reserve Intelligence Unit at Chanute Air Force Base.
For 30 years he was the owner and operator of Scientific Shoe Service in Chicago and moved to Champaign in 1969. He then owned and operated the Shakey's Pizza and was the co-founder of the East Central Illinois Low Vision support group, was a member of the Champaign-Urbana Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, enjoyed going to OLLIE classes and was a sober friend of Bill W for two and a half years. He enjoyed going to men's coffee at the Stevick Senior Center, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling in his RV all over the country. He was a member of American Legion Post 24.
Visitation for Mr. Fischer will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, with a short service to follow at 4 p.m. Military rites will be given by VFW 5520 and the Illinois National Guard.
Memorials should be directed to East Central Illinois Low Vision Center, Champaign.
