URBANA – Lawrence W. Menges, age 91, of Urbana passed away at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, with the Rev. John Kapps officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a 2:45 p.m. Masonic rites service.
Lawrence was born Oct. 6, 1919, at St. Joseph, the son of Walter and Cora Denhart Menges. He married Patricia J. Wadhams on April 15, 1981, at Urbana. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Menges of St. Joseph; a stepdaughter, Debbie Martinka of Virginia; two granddaughters, Lesli and Lori; four stepgrandchildren, Edward, Debbie, Vanessa and Rachel; two great-grandchildren, Marissa and Chaney; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Kristi and Kyle; and one sister, Frieda Ems.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Allen Menges; a great-grandson, Aaron Williams; two brothers; and one sister.
Lawrence was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a former Illinois State Police trooper. He retired from the University of Illinois in 1976 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of the St. Joseph AF&AM Lodge 970 for 63 years and was also active in Champaign Lodge 240. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Danville. He graduated from St. Joseph Ogden High School in 1937.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital for Children.
