Howard Fortney

TOLONO – Howard W. Fortney, 91, of Tolono passed away at 12:23 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Tolono United Methodist Church with the Rev. B.C. Hwang officiating. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. with a Masonic service at 1:45 p.m. at the church.
Freese Funeral Home 407 N. Bourne, Tolono is handling arrangements.
Mr. Fortney was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Mattoon, a son to Roy and Letha Arline Hughart Fortney. He married Ruby Starwalt on Oct. 9, 1947, at the First Methodist Church in Mattoon. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2008.
Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Hughes of Spanish Fork, Utah, three sister-in-laws, Eloise Fortney of Jackson, Ga., Shirley Cox of Montrose and Hope Starwalt of Riverton, Wyo., and a brother-in-law, Rex Starwalt of Montrose. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Mr. Fortney served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed at Kuhne Furniture Factory, Mattoon, Eastern Illinois University and Solo Cup, Urbana, among other employers.
He was a member of Tolono United Methodist Church and was a Master Mason in the Tolono Lodge No. 391 AF & AM.
He played baseball in the Mattoon League for many years and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He and Ruby liked to travel and he enjoyed his monthly high school class dinners in Mattoon.
