From Beyond The Veils

Greetings Companions,
As you are aware, our stated convocation on February 22 was a very busy night for our Chapter. Not only was it our stated convocation, but we also received our District Deputy Grand High Priest, Norm Trousdale, and conferred the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch degrees. We had a very good turnout and everything went well. We conferred the degrees on 13 candidates, 12 of our own and 1 for Equality Chapter. The candidates seemed to thoroughly enjoy the work, and many have already expressed a desire to be active in our York Rite Bodies. So, Companions, please extend a hearty welcome to our newly exalted Companions, encourage them to continue in their pursuit of further light, and demonstrate to them the close and sincere fellowship we all enjoy as Companions.
Companions, I would like to call your attention to one other thing you might find to be of interest. This same night, February 22, our Chapter reached another milestone. For the first time, we conferred the Royal Arch degree entirely in house without any outside help. What this means is that Henry Godeke Chapter #38 is now totally self sufficient in performing our capitular work. Now, there is still room for improvement and we still need people to learn work and take part, but we are now capable of performing all of our own work, as we need to. Companions, this is indeed a great accomplishment, especially when you consider that just three years ago we were barely able to even open and close the Chapter. And, while we always welcome visitors and are happy to oblige anyone who wishes to participate in our work, we are no longer dependant on the help of others.
Finally, I would like to encourage all of you to take an interest in and become actively involved with your York Rite Bodies. There will be much activity in the coming months in which you might wish to be involved; from fundraisers to degree work, social events, and special occasions. So, keep your eyes on the newsletter, and if you see something you would like to be part of, or if you have an idea, question, or comment, please contact one of us, for we truly value your input.

                                                                                                Fraternally Yours,
                                                                                                Jason Kinsolving, EHP

RA Cipher Message 2

 POOR & WEARY PILGRIM:

I was hoping to have more information about our upcoming Outdoor Order of the Temple but it has taken another turn. We are working on something jointly between the Grand Commandery of Illinois and Indiana.

I am really proud of our Commandery officers that worked so hard for our inspection.

A big JOB WELL DONE to the members and officers of Henry Godeke Chapter #38 and W.R. Lashbrook Council for doing all of the degrees themselves. Maybe in just a short time our Commandery will be able to do the same.

“ Remember your obligation, you took it too”

May God Bless,
Bill Hussey

Did You Know? THE BELOW IS A REPRINT FROM THE ILLINOIS YORK RITE NEWSLETTER DATED OCTOBER 2004. IT IS FROM JOHN T. RIEDAS, SR. WHO WAS RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER FROM 2004/2005.
Sir Knights: Several months ago, at the Spring Planning Meeting of the Grand Commandery Officers, we presented to those present a program “BACK TO THE BASICS” As the program is too long to present to you in one issue, we will be a part of this program each month. We feel that if you follow these twenty-six points it will improve your Commandery in a number of ways, new members, attendance and the future of Templary in general.

M- MEMBERSHIP:
Membership- Our lifeline to eternity. For only as long as we continue to bring in new members are we assured of continuity. Membership has two aspects;
First- The acquisition of new members.
Second – The retention of the present members.
Individuals, remember that, join organizations for various reasons, each of which is important to that person. For some it is the influence of family and or friends. For some it is the security of membership within an organization of high standards, and for others it is our charitable endeavors. For whatever reason that individual becomes a member he has certain expectations. As long as we continue to meet those expectations he will remain a viable part of our program, but as soon as his needs and interests are not met his interests will be diverted to another direction and he will be a candidate for suspension.

Membership within the Masonic Fraternity is predicated upon filling a need. Whatever that need may be. We come into this fraternity as an individual. One man at a time, knocking upon the door of the Lodge and seeking admission. It is our responsibility to fulfill that need and such time that we no longer fill that need that individual member becomes a candidate for inactive membership and ultimately will stop paying his dues and will subject himself for possible removal from the active membership roll.

We need to consider the interests of our prospective members along with the needs and interests of our currant membership. It is incumbent upon the officers of a Commandery to strike a balance between these needs. The more successful that balance, the stronger the membership program of the Commandery.

Editors note: We will continue each issue with 1 of the 26 points.

Capitular Club/ Royal & Select Club: At our last meeting Feb 21st we decided to merge the two clubs and work on whichever degree that needs the most work. The next meeting will be March 21st at Albion. We will start at 2:30pm. There are many small parts for companions who would like to get involved. Try it you might just have fun!

Next Meeting: March 22nd at 7pm with our dinner at 6pm. Come break bread with your brothers and enjoy the fellowship. We have decided to ask for a minimum $5.00 donation for our meals. Any money collected above the cost of the meal will go into a meal fund. At the end of the year we will have a family meal somewhere.

Quotes:   How much did your room cost at Grand Sessions?
                 NORMAN TROUSDALE

March 22nd Meeting: Bryan Hart and his merry Council Officers will open the meeting.

Charles Willis - Paris

Charles E. Willis
(July 17, 1915 - February 8, 2010)

Charles Edwin Willis, well-known industrial engineer and philanthropist, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at Paris Community Hospital, Paris, Illinois. He was born July 17, 1915, in Marion, Indiana, the son of Ralph and Josephine Gates Willis.

He married Genevieve Davis, whom he loved for over 66 years, on May 10, 1941. She preceded him in death in 2007.

Mr. Willis is survived by his children Joanna (Tom) Hebermehl of Paris, Richard Willis (Sue Kinsely) of Lafitte, LA, and Bruce (Susi) Willis, of Paris; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Gary) Abernathy of Paris, Michael (Janis) Hebermehl of Huntington Beach, CA, David (Alissa) Hebermehl of Louisville, KY and Corey Willis of San Pedro, CA; and five great-grandchildren, Adalee, Derek, and Dustin Abernathy, and Dawson & Jillian Hebermehl.

Fondly known as “Charley,” Willis graduated from Anderson High School, Anderson, Indiana. He was a member of the basketball team – a sport that sparked not only his life-long love of sports, but also his competitive spirit. He and Gen were avid sports fans and enjoyed attending many events together. Willis graduated from General Motors Institute (Kettering University) in 1939 with a degree in industrial engineering, having attended under a co-operative education scholarship program. As a part of its 75th anniversary celebration, GMI honored him as one of its 75 Outstanding Graduates. During World War II, as a process engineer with RCA in Indianapolis, Willis headed a program called “Underwater Sound Detection” that was used to detect German submarines along the East Coast of the United States.

A few years after the War, Charley & Gen relocated to Paris, IL. For 40 years, he was the co-owner of Meco, Inc., which specialized in the engineering, design, and fabrication of metal products. Under the leadership of Mr. Willis and his business partner, Russ Magers, Meco, Inc. became nationally recognized for its superior designs and high-quality products.

Charley’s success as an entrepreneur enabled him to indulge his passion for cooking by launching Mr. Charley’s Restaurant. An avid golfer, he acquired Sycamore Hills Golf Course and enjoyed hosting many golf and culinary events from 1985 – 1998. Charley never forgot that a scholarship enabled him to attain his college education. He spent most of his life trying to honor those who had helped him by encouraging students to set high goals. Mr. & Mrs. Willis gave generously to various colleges and university scholarship and academic programs, including Kettering and Indiana State Universities, the University of Illinois, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, and Cumberland College.

His dedication to higher education was recognized by these institutions. He was honored to receive the Illinois Varisity “I” for outstanding service to the University of Illinois in 1990. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana State University. He twice received the William Albert Jones Medal from ISU’s presidents - from Dr. Richard Landini in 1992, and Dr. John Moore in 2000. He started and funded the ISU Entrepreneurship Retreat, which later evolved to a credit course. Charley was very proud to receive an honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Cumberland College in 2003. Mr. Willis felt blessed to have settled in Paris, Illinois and raise his family there. Again, he tried to give back. Quality local health care was extremely important to him. He served as a trustee of the Hospital & Medical Foundation, and was a contributor to Paris Community Hospital. He and Gen were strong supporters of the Paris Community Y, serving on its Board of Directors and supporting the expansion of the original facility by funding the addition of the racquetball courts.

Mr. Willis was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and 40 year member of Rotary International, and was named the local Club’s Citizen of the Year in 1982. He was a member of the Edgar County Shrine Club. Known for challenging others to support worthy causes, Willis was one of the founding directors of the Edgar County Community Foundation, which was created to provide area residents with the opportunity to endow funds in order to improve the quality of life in Paris and Edgar County. Following cremation, visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010 in Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home with memorial services at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Edgar County Community Foundaton, PO Box 400, Paris, IL 61944.
