GAO Grotto Clowns have Fun

Clowns spread holiday cheer

BY MARY WICOFF - Danville Commercial News December 24, 2009

DANVILLE — Clowns do more than cavort in circuses and prance in parades. In Danville, the Gao Grotto’s clown unit also spreads holiday cheer in nursing homes each December.

Dressed in bright costumes and cheerful makeup, the clowns distributed dozens of Beanie Babies to senior citizens earlier this month.

“We try to keep people happy,” said Don Knee, president of the clown group and also a past monarch of the Grotto.

The group chose two nursing homes at random — this year, Colonial Manor and Hawthorne Inn — and distributed the stuffed animals, which were donated by Gao Grotto members and others.

Making a holiday appearance at the nursing homes is just one example of the group’s community outreach efforts. The clowns also make balloon animals at schools, march in parades, walk in charitable events such as the March of Dimes and participate in the AMBUCS summer camp, among other activities.

The clown unit is a subordinate group of the Grotto, which is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. The clown unit usually has up to 15 members, said Marietta West, vice president of that group and a clown since 2003.

The clowns especially make sure they walk in parades, such as the Hoopeston Sweet Corn Festival, Oakwood Fourth of July and Danville Labor Day events. Instead of candy, the clowns hand out toothbrushes to the children along the parade route — part of the Grotto’s program to promote dental care among the underprivileged and special needs children.

“It’s nice to see the smiles on the kids (on the parade route),” West said. “It’s a fun thing.”

The clowns also like to give big hugs to people and say, “You’ve been hugged by a clown — have a great day.”

However, they don’t force themselves on those who are afraid of clowns, West added.

What’s nice about the clown unit is it allows women and children to participate, both West and Knee said. The Grotto is a men’s organization.

Most of the clowns are women, Knee said; the men in the group dress up like hobos. Also, members’ children and grandchildren get involved, and will walk in the parades. Some like to do cartwheels along the route, Knee said.

“Kids like things like this,” he said. “They love to get out there and show off.”

West said the clowns make their own outfits or buy them, and some have nicknames. They don’t go to clown school, she said, but they do help each other with makeup tips at meetings.

Now that the holidays are winding down, the clown unit will be inactive until March or April, West said. Then the group will get ready for another year of parades, school events and nursing home visits.

However, she stressed that the clowns are not available for hire at private parties.

Besides the clowns, the Grotto also has dinners that are open to the public, and sponsors other events.

FYI

To donate Beanie Babies or to schedule an appearance by the Gao Grotto clowns, call Marietta West at 442-2317. The clowns appear only at community events, and not at private parties.

Editorial Without Words - Shriners Hospitals

This picture by photographer Randy Dieterwhich came to symbolize the work of the Shriner's and Shriners Hospitals.  The Shriner in the picture is Albert "Al" Hortman, 80 who passed away December 6, 2009.  The story from the Shriners website:

Albert "Al" Hortman, 80, passed away on December 6, 2009. He will be best remembered as the Shriner carrying the young girl in the iconic photograph that became a beloved symbol of the Shriners fraternity and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Hortman, a member of Al Sihah Shriners in Macon, Ga., is survived by his wife, Doris Anita Bridges Hortman; daughters, Julie M. Shofstall (Steve),  Laura H. Little (Chuck), Tina M. Perkins, and Donna L. Cline (Dana); brother, Mack Hortman and sisters, Gwendolyn King and Jeanette Ricks, and several grandchildren.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart. He retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base, owned a pool business and worked at McCullough Funeral Home. He was a member of Jeffersonville Blue Lodge.

Hortman became a Shriner in 1968, after one of his daughters began receiving treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

In 1970, photographer Randy Dieter was on assignment for a local newspaper covering Hadi Shriners’ annual outing for children with disabilities at an amusement park, when he happened upon Hortman carrying a young girl named Bobbi Jo Wright, and her crutches. One of Hortman's daughters is also in the photo, walking next to them.

“I was taking shots of the midway and was using my telephoto lens,” Dieter said. “I saw a local Shriner walking by carrying a little girl in one hand and her crutches in the other...I had to take my last shot as they walked by. It was the end of the roll. If I had to think about it, I wouldn’t have come up with something like that. Fate guides you."

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605

Freemasons in the United States Congress

Lodge Number One - the North Pole

Lodge Number One, the North Pole
Author Unknown

'Twas the Night before Christmas, and down at the lodge
not a gavel was stirring, and in the hodge-podge.

Of aprons and jewels and chairs East and West
You could savor the silence, most gladly divest

All metal and mineral, it mattered not,
Since Christmas was nigh and the coals were still hot.

In the hearth of your homeplace, all Masons abed,
As visions of trestleboards danced in their head;

When up on the roof there arose such a clatter
Our Tiler jumped up to see what was the matter!

He picked up his sword and ran fast to the door,
Three knocks shook the panels - he wondered 'What for?'

He answered the knocking with raps of his own,
And once the door opened he saw, with a moan
Of delight it was Santa, all jolly and red

Except for one notable feature instead!
Upon his large finger he wore what we knew

Was compasses and square on a background of blue!
'Why Santa!' he shouted and lowered his blade,

'I see you're a Mason!' the Tiler relayed.
He looked tow'rd the Master's most dignified chair

And said, voice near trembling, 'Most Worshipful Sir
There's a Gentleman properly clothed at the gate!

The Master replied, 'Let's allow him - but wait!
You tell me a Gentleman, but I don't see

His Apron beneath that red suit, can it be
Our visitor hasn't been properly raised?

Must we offer a test that is suitably phrased?
'I do beg your pardon,' ol' Santa said quick

As he pulled up his coat and displayed not a stick
But a cane with engraving, two balls did appear

And oh, what an apron, he wore and held dear!
Adorned like the Master's, complete with a sign

Of "Lodge Number One, the North Pole" on one line!
"Now let this man enter," the Master declared,

And once in the Lodge room, the Brethren all stared,
For Santa was wearing a jewel not seen

For many a century - there in between
The fur of his coat and the splendid red collar

Gleamed two golden reindeer that shone line a dollar!
"It's Donner and Blitzen, who I must confess

"Are actually images brought from the West
By my Warden, a craftsman like none in the world!"

And with a great laugh from his bag he unfurled
An ear of fine corn, and some oil from the East,

"My friend I have plenty, tonight we will feast
On all that is good! We are Masons, kind sir!"

A murmur went throughout the Lodge, quite a stir,
As presents and promises flew from his sack!

This Santa, a Mason, showed he had a knack
For making this Christmas the best you could glean,

And soon even Deacons were laughing, they'd seen
On this very night only happiness reigned!

This jolly Saint Nicholas quickly explained
That only a Mason could be so inclined

To make all kids happy, make all people find
A Christmas so special, yes, Santa was right!

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

From Beyond The Veils

Greetings Companions,

Your York Rite Bodies are going to be very busy over the next couple of months, with much work to do and many activities to attend. Some of the things your Chapter will be doing are as follows. Our next stated meeting, December 28, will be our annual Christmas Party, and the Chapter will be opening. We will have a very short meeting, conducting only as much business as is absolutely necessary; after which time we will adjourn to the dining room for food, games, friendship, and fellowship. We will also be competing in the first round of the Keystone Quest that night. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the Keystone Quest is a Masonic trivia contest consisting of question and answer cards which must be matched within the time allotted and submitted to the Grand Chapter. The winning Chapters from each district then compete in the second round, and the three best scores from there go on to compete for the championship at Grand Sessions. Companions this is one of the Grand Chapter’s best programs, for while everyone wants to do well, the true spirit of this competition is not to “beat the other guy” but to have fun while learning more about Freemasonry. If you go into it with this attitude, I can assure you that you will enjoy it. The questions and answers for this round are drawn from the entries under the letter “G” in Mackey’s Encyclopedia, which can be found online in a number of places, one of which is www.glnb.org/books/mackeyE/. So, study up and come enjoy all the fun and camaraderie at our next stated meeting.
Your Chapter will also be conferring the 4th & 5th degrees at Flat Rock Lodge #348 on Wednesday January 20 for several new candidates. At our stated meeting on February 22 our Chapter will receive our District Deputy Grand High Priest. We will also be conferring the 6th & 7th degrees that night. So, whether or not you are interested in performing degree work, please attend and help welcome our new Companions into the wonderful world that is the York Rite of Freemasonry. I would also encourage all of you, especially the officers and those interested in learning, to attend our Capitular Club. The next meeting will be December 20 at 2:30 PM in Albion.
More information will be forthcoming on these, and many other activities and events. And I hope to see you all at these events. So, keep a watch on the newsletters for the many opportunities for friendship and fellowship offered by your York Rite Bodies for YOU, for, indeed, YOU are the York Rite, and the York Rite is YOU.

Fraternally Yours,
Jason Kinsolving, EHP

FROM THE SECRET VAULT
Companions,

“Sometimes no news is good news…except when the editor is demanding an article for the newsletter.” –Bryan L. Hart

We do have several more petitions in the works. It could be a busy late winter/early spring.

A Grand Council “School of Instruction” is being planned and will most likely be held at one of the Council’s in our District. I have put the word out that we would be honored to host it. We will have to wait and see what happens. I believe the instruction would cover opening, closing, receiving various dignitaries, and any specific questions anyone may have.
“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” – Teddy Roosevelt
Until Next Time,

POOR & WEARY PILGRIM:
Our Inspection has been move to Feb. 20th. Please take time to mark this in your calendar.

Some exciting events are being planned for 2010!!! We are meeting this week to finalize some plans and we will make a big announcement very soon.

Christmas is almost upon us and it’s getting colder. This is the time to check on our older members and widows. Call on them and see if they need anything or use some help. The Grand Lodge has a OUTREACH PROGRAM could they use this? Our Grand Lodge found one widow eating cat food. Could this be one of your Lodge’s widows?

As our society pulls further and further away from religion it is up to us as Knights Templars to remind our family and friends what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. Let us put Christ back in Christmas.

“ Remember your obligation, you took it too”

May God Bless,
Bill Hussey

Did You Know? THE BELOW IS A REPRINT FROM THE ILLINOIS YORK RITE NEWSLETTER DATED OCTOBER 2004. IT IS FROM JOHN T. RIEDAS, SR. WHO WAS RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER FROM 2004/2005.
Sir Knights: Several months ago, at the Spring Planning Meeting of the Grand Commandery Officers, we presented to those present a program “BACK TO THE BASICS” As the program is too long to present to you in one issue, we will be a part of this program each month. We feel that if you follow these twenty-six points it will improve your Commandery in a number of ways, new members, attendance and the future of Templary in general.
I – ILLINOIS KNIGHT TEMPLAR HOME AT PAXTON ILLINOIS:

The pride of Illinois is our Illinois Knight Templar Home for the Aged Infirm, located in Paxton, Illinois. For over fifty years, this home, the only Knight Templar Home in the Grand Encampment has served the needs of the Sir Knights, Ladies and members of our Masonic Family in Illinois. “We endeavor to bind up the wounds of the afflicted.”
A visit to this monument to those of our senior members who now are dependent upon us for care brings a strong feeling of pride to each of us as we enter through the portals of this building designed for their care and comfort.

Editors note: we will continue each issue with 1 of the 26 points.

Capitular Club: The next meeting will be Dec. 20th at Albion. We will start at 2:30pm. There are many small parts for companions who would like to get involved. Try it you might just have fun!

Next Meeting: Dec 28th at 7pm with our dinner at 6pm. Come break bread with your brothers and enjoy the fellowship. We have decided to ask for a minimum $5.00 donation for our meals. Any money collected above the cost of the meal will go into a meal fund. At the end of the year we will have a family meal somewhere.
